DARE/SRO

The DARE program is implemented in several school districts within Lewis and Clark County, including East Helena, Wolf Creek, Augusta, and Lincoln. Deputies assigned as DARE instructors are responsible for delivering the DARE curriculum, which focuses on drug abuse resistance education. These instructors are required to complete a two-week DARE training course and, in some cases, an additional week-long School Resource Officer (SRO) training hosted by the National Association of School Resource Officers. In addition to classroom instruction, DARE instructors organize and oversee events such as a summer DARE Camp for fifth-grade graduates and the annual Heroes and Helpers event, which assists underprivileged families with holiday shopping.

The SRO program places law enforcement officers within schools to provide a visible presence, ensure safety, and build positive relationships with students and staff. At East Helena High School, for example, the SRO is tasked with providing law enforcement services to the school and its surrounding areas, investigating criminal incidents, enforcing laws, and collaborating with school administrators to maintain a safe school environment. The SRO also develops and teaches law-related curriculum, offers training for school personnel in handling crisis situations, and participates in school functions to strengthen community ties.

Both the DARE and SRO programs are part of the Sheriff's Office's broader efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of students in Lewis and Clark County. These programs not only aim to prevent substance abuse and criminal behavior but also to foster trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
