The Transport and Extradition Division of the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office in Montana plays a critical role in the secure movement of individuals within the criminal justice system. This division is responsible for coordinating and executing a variety of transportation tasks, ensuring the safety and compliance of all involved parties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inmate Transports: The division manages the secure transportation of inmates to and from the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center, as well as to other facilities such as the Montana State Prison, Montana State Women's Prison, and various Department of Corrections facilities. This includes transporting individuals for sentencing, court appearances, and other legal proceedings.
  • Medical and Mental Health Appointments: Transport officers are tasked with taking inmates to medical and dental appointments, as well as to the hospital when necessary. They also transport individuals to mental health facilities, such as the Warm Springs State Hospital, ensuring that those with mental health needs receive appropriate care.
  • Extraditions: The division handles the coordination and execution of extraditions, both in and out of state, for individuals with outstanding warrants. This process involves legal procedures to return individuals to the jurisdiction where they are required to face charges.

Staffing and Structure

The Transport and Extradition Division is staffed by a Transport and Extradition Coordinator and a Transport Officer. These professionals are responsible for the planning and execution of all transport-related activities. When not engaged in transport duties, these officers perform other responsibilities within the Detention Center, ensuring flexibility and coverage across various functions.

Annual Activity

The division manages an average of 400 prisoner transports annually, along with 150 medical transports, 80 mental health transports, and 30 extraditions. This high volume underscores the critical nature of their operations in maintaining the flow and security of individuals within the justice system.
