Criminal Investigations

The Criminal Investigation Division for the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office covers major investigations, evidence handling, follow up investigations.  Below is additional information:

CID Structure & Staff

  • Six Detectives + 1 Supervisor (Sergeant)
    The division comprises six full-time detectives overseen by a Sergeant
  • Specialized Assignments
    • Violence Against Women Advocate (VAWA)
    • Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force member
  • Evidence Technician
    A dedicated staff member manages the intake, custody, lab coordination, and chain‑of‑custody tasks

 

Core Responsibilities

  1. Major Investigations
    They lead investigations into serious crimes such as homicides, sexual assaults, and internet-related offenses.
  2. Routine Crimes
    Detectives handle casework involving burglaries, theft, and criminal mischief.
  3. Collaborative Work
    • Coordinates with the county coroner in cases like suicides or unattended deaths
    • Works with Helena Police Department, Montana’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Federal Agencies, prosecutors, and forensic labs
  1. Evidence Management
    The Evidence Technician supports investigative work and maintains strict chain‑of‑custody procedures
