Coroner's Inquest

A coroner's inquest is scheduled for May 8 and 9, 2025, to formally inquire into the causes and circumstances surrounding the death of Paul Rolfes on November 3, 2024, while in an altercation with Helena Police Department officers at Jesters Bar.

Mr. Rolfe's death was investigated by the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's office. Coroner's inquests must be held when a death occurs while a person is being taken into custody or is in the custody of a peace officer or if the death is caused by a peace officer.

The inquest will be conducted by Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Coroner Jessie Sather who is substituting for Lewis and Clark County Coroner Leo Dutton. The inquest begins at 9:00 a.m. in Judge Abbott's Courtroom of the Lewis & Clark County Courthouse with the selection of a jury. The inquest is expected to last two days.
