Effective July 1, 2026
Based on the recommendation of Sheriff Leo Dutton, in his capacity as Fire Warden and in consultation with the Rural Fire Council, United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, open debris burning in Lewis & Clark County will close at 12:01 am on July 1, 2026. The reasoning behind this closure is to reduce the number of human-caused fires during the hottest period of the year. Should meteorological conditions change, this may be reevaluated.
