Indigent and Abandoned Bodies
Lewis and Clark County can provide cremation services for those who cannot afford to do so for themselves. The county contracts with local funeral homes to cremate abandoned and indigent bodies for those who do not have legal next of kin to assist financially or do not have the ability to pay for a cremation themselves.
To be considered for a county cremation, you must complete the Indigent Form in the link on this webpage. Please complete the form on behalf of the decedent, or if on hospice care, the patient can complete the form prior to death. Lewis and Clark County Coroner Division will contact you once the form is complete.
Once a decedent has been approved for a county provided cremation, the ashes will stay with the Lewis and Clark County Coroner Division until buried at the Lewis and Clark County Cemetery on McHugh Drive. The ashes will not be buried for one year in case family members come forward to reimburse the county for the cost of the cremation. Once reimbursed, the Coroner Division will release the remains into their care.
This program is only available for those in financial need. Lewis and Clark County is not a funeral home or cremation provider.
If you have questions, please contact the Coroner Division at 406-442-7398.
