Government Affairs

* West Region Wildfires Update (Jonathan Shuffield)

* Currently, 71 large active wildfires have burned a total of 4.1 million acres around the west. This year, nearly 8.3 million acres burned nationwide. Recent legislation introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein, S. 4431, the Emergency Wildfire and Public Safety Act<https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/4431?s=1&r=1>, would expedite environmental reviews for landscape scale projects proposed by governors to reduce fuel loads. Additionally, S. 4625, the National Prescribed Fire Act<https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/4625>, sponsored by Sen. Wyden would create new $300 million accounts for the US Forest Service and Department of the Interior to finance controlled burns and direct support to counties for their own fuels reduction programs. Jonathan Shuffield will discuss these bills and public lands content for the NACo Virtual Federal Policy Summit<https://www.naco.org/events/naco-virtual-federal-policy-summit>.

* Surface Transportation Extension (Jessica Jennings)

* The recently enacted Continuing Resolution (CR) that lawmakers passed to continue funding the government past September 30 included an extension of the current surface transportation law — the FAST Act (P.L. 114-94). While the majority of programs remain the same, there are some changes to the law that could impact county transportation and infrastructure projects. Hear from NACo’s Jessica Jennings to learn more about the CR’s one-year extension of the FAST Act and visit the NACo Analysis: Surface Transportation 101 for Counties<https://www.naco.org/resources/naco-analysis-surface-transportation-101-counties>.

* Update on COVID-19 Vaccine Development and Distribution (Blaire Bryant)

* In October- states, counties and other local jurisdictions will submit their COVID-19 vaccination plans to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As gatekeepers of the local health and human service safety net, counties have an integral role in the ongoing development of these plans and the implementation. NACo’s Blaire Bryant will provide an update on the work of Operation Warp Speed, the federal initiative overseeing vaccine development and deployment, and an overview of key county considerations for vaccine deployment and related resources.

NACo Financial Services Corp (FSC)

* Nationwide Retirement Solutions (Carlos Greene)

* With a 40-year history of exceptional and strong partnership, NACo and Nationwide have provided retirement services solutions to county employees by educating and helping them to prepare for and live comfortably in retirement. The numbers speak for themselves: over 1.6 million employees have taken advantage of the services offered, over $22 billion in assets as of June 30, 2020, over 400,000 participants with balances in the plan and 41 state associations who endorse the program.

* Here are a few of the services and benefits associated with the plan:

* The Program is the only one of its kind to appoint an advisory committee composed of county representatives from across the U.S.

* 457b 401a and 401k plans have been created and delivers solutions and strategies for many of your retirement program needs

* With Nationwide’s partnership ambassador, here’s a great thank-you clip from Peyton Manning: nationwide.box.com/s/dpdoll2xwnmbtgjc3nrly7t49q033u4t

* For additional information please do not hesitate to contact Carlos Greene, Senior Program Director, at Cgreene@naco.org<mailto:Cgreene@naco.org> or 770-881-0100 or you can log on to the enhanced Nationwide website at www.NSRFOR.COM<http://www.NSRFOR.COM> for plan information.
