Augusta Solid Waste Management District Announces New Permit System

Helena, MT – The Augusta Solid Waste Management District announced the implementation of a new permit system for the Augusta Solid Waste Transfer Site beginning January 1, 2023. The permit system, which was adopted by the District’s Board on November 10, 2022, will capture lost revenue from out-of-district users and improve sustainability of services at the transfer site.

“In recent years, we’ve seen an increase in traffic at the transfer site from out-of-district residents who do not pay into the solid waste district,” said Jenny Chambers, Lewis and Clark County Public Works Director. “Capturing this lost revenue through an effective permit system will provide funding for us to invest into operational and infrastructure improvements.”

Under the new permit system, all Augusta Solid Waste District property owners paying the solid waste assessment will receive a numbered permit associated with their property. The permit is valid through June 30, 2025. Owners paying the assessment on more than one property will receive a permit for each.

Out-of-district residents may pay-as-you-use for $15.00 per cubic yard to dispose of waste, recycling, grass, branches, and scrap metal materials. Out-of-district residents also have the option to purchase a permit. The permit fee is prorated based on date of purchase.

Permits are not available for purchase at the transfer site. To purchase a permit please contact Misty Edwards at 406-447-8313.

Area residents who rent should work with the property owner for permit use or they may use the transfer site as an out-of-district resident.

While residents will have a 30-day grace period to adjust to the permit requirement, after January 31, 2023, site users will be required to show their permit to the attendant before using the transfer site or pay the $15.00 fee.

“The permits are designed to be hung from a rear-view mirror or stored in your vehicle,” said Chambers, “and we encourage users to get into the habit of carrying their permit in their vehicle so they don’t have to make a second trip.”

Permits will be mailed to property owners the week of December 19, 2022. For more information about the Augusta Solid Waste Permit System visit: bit.ly/AugustaWastePermit
