Helena – The Lewis and Clark County Board of County Commissioners today approved an amendment to extend hours for the Lewis and Clark County Motor Vehicle Department, located in the City-County building at 316 N. Park Ave.

The change goes into effect March 1, 2021, and allows the Motor Vehicle Department to open to the public from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday (closed on legal holidays). The current hours are 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.

The added hours will allow for more title appointments and extend the hours of the renewal line to shortly after 7:00 am to 5:45 pm. The renewal line is available to renew a vehicle registration, receive a Temporary Registration Permit, to process title work for one Montana vehicle purchased from an individual and to schedule an appointment (if available).

The Lewis and Clark County Treasurer/Clerk & Recorders office requested the change. Section 7-4-102 MCA requires the BoCC, with the cooperation of each separately elected county official, to establish hours for all offices in the County.

Title appointments can be scheduled online for recently purchased vehicles at Scheduling by phone is available at 406-447-8328.

Vehicle registration renewals can be done entirely online at, by using the drop-box at the City-County Building Motor Vehicles Department (316 N. Park Ave.) or by walk-in, no appointment necessary.
