Invasive Rush Skeletonweed Found in Lewis and Clark County

The Montana Department of Agriculture has confirmed that a previously unseen invasive weed species called Rush Skeletonweed has been found at two different sites outside of Helena. Classified as Priority 1B Noxious Weed, Rush Skeletonweed has a limited presence in Montana, but once established, can reduce crop yields as much as 70%. Found plant populations should be eradicated or contained. 

The plant has rosettes like a dandelion and branched stems with few or no leaves, giving it a skeleton-like appearance. The flowers, which are yellow and smaller than a dime, appear in late summer. When seeded, they have tufted white hairs which are easily dispersed by wind. 

Rush Skeletonweed is difficult to control and harmful to agriculture and wildland habitat so early identification and control is important. To report a suspected plant, please contact the Lewis and Clark County Weed Coordinator at 406-447-8072.
