Family and Consumer Science Resources

MSU Extension offers a variety of public outreach programs that "extend" its research and education resources out to Montana communities.

Family and Consumer Science (FCS - formerly Home Economics) Agents work with agency, nonprofit and business partners to share information about Community Health, Family Economics, Family and Human Development, and Food and Nutrition.

Some of the FCS programs in Lewis and Clark County are:

Food Preservation

  • Yes You Can! Join us for an hour-long discussion on the basics of food preservation. We will be at Rock Hand Hardware demoing the basics of water bath and pressure canning. All attendees will receive a $10 Rock Hand Hardware gift card AND be entered to win a 23-QT Pressure Cooker/Canner! This event is free and open to the public. In partnership with Rock Hand Hardware and Helena Food Share

Pressure canner gauge testing. The gauge on a pressure canner can become inaccurate over time affecting the quality or safety of your produce. Free testing is available at the Extension Office.
