Procedures for Claiming Your Vehicle:

You may also be directed to the Criminal Investigations Bureau at (406) 447-8242 or the investigating officer/detective.

Step 1:
Contact the CIB office of Property and Evidence to schedule an appointment. If you have the receipt or case number for an vehicle you reported lost or stolen or was recovered, please provide it when scheduling an appointment.  The case number usually begins with “LC”. It will be helpful to have the date of occurrence and names of people involved with your case/incident.

Step 2:
At the time of your appointment, present a valid driver's license along with: the completed Property Release Form; proof of current liability insurance for vehicle if you plan on driving it, and the letter you received from the Sheriff’s Office.

You will also need to sign a Release letter which you will be provided a copy of.

If you are unable to retrieve your vehicle and need someone else to pick it up, please prepare a notarized statement granting authority so they can retrieve the vehicle for you. You can download a copy of the Notarized Release Form here (PDF).

Services:
Vehicle release only. No vehicles or parts are sold at this facility.

Vehicle Release:
Vehicles will be released to the person named on the Vehicle Release Form issued by Montana Title and Registration Bureau. The person named on the Vehicle Release Form may grant authority to another person to retrieve their vehicle by issuing a notarized statement to accompany the Release Form.

In all cases, proper ID must be presented when retrieving a vehicle. The driver of the released vehicle must present a valid driver’s license and proof of current liability insurance.
