History Fair - May 17, 2014

The Lewis and Clark County Historic Preservation Commission will host its 6th annual History Fair on Saturday, May 17, 2014, on the Downtown Walking Mall from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The History Fair is a multi-faceted event that features food (including Indian Tacos), live music, demonstrations, pioneer craft and skill demonstrations, living history performers in period dress, and historical reenactments.

The 2014 Fair celebrates the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold and the settlement of Helena. In the past we have featured cavalry reenactments, actors portraying Helenans and Montanans of the past, and live old-time and period music.  Demonstrations have included blacksmithing on a coal-fired forge, horsehair hitching, brands, mining history and fire assay, flint napping (making of “arrowheads”) and gold panning, and the making of Norwegian lefse and krumkake (tasting samples included!).

A portion of the Mall is dedicated to a living history project demonstrating pioneer life, and there’s always at least a shootout or two (a couple years ago Samuel T. Hauser’s 1886 First National Bank was robbed in broad daylight).  Numerous historical and preservation organizations are set up along the Mall to answer your questions and provide information as well.  The History Fair is fun for all ages, from toddlers to 99. Hope to see you there!
